OEM vs ODM: Which Route Fits Your Project

The difference between OEM and ODM, what each costs you in time and control, and how to decide.

The short version

OEM — you own the design, we manufacture it. ODM — we own an existing platform, you adapt it and brand it. Private label — you take a stock model unchanged and add your logo.

What decides it

Three questions:

  1. Do you already have a design? If yes, OEM. If no, ODM or private label.
  2. Is your differentiation in the product or the brand? Product differentiation usually needs OEM. Brand differentiation can work fine on an ODM platform.
  3. How much time do you have? Private label is measured in weeks, ODM in months, OEM in quarters.

The hidden cost of OEM

OEM gives the most control and carries the most engineering risk. Tooling, certification and design iterations are paid by you before the first unit ships.

The hidden risk of short routes

On a stock platform, your competitor can buy the same device and put a different logo on it. That is acceptable for a pilot, but not for a product you intend to build a brand around.
